To start off this week, have a new Gerard Way music video! The music video for “No Shows” that Gerard Way released not too long ago was delightful, but it was also just as… inexplicable as this one is. In fact, this music video is more so.
But let me go back to the beginning.
A lot of people have been awaiting this song, ever since Gerard Way teased us all by releasing the lyrics to “Millions” back in July 2013. I think that all of Gerard Way’s more recent songs have a sort of abstractness to them that manages to convey the perfect mood and feeling to his audience. I could go on and on explaining what I think this song means, but I’ll just give you what Gerard said. According to Alternative Press, Gerard says that the song is about a group of jewel thieves. “Everything is fine, then everything goes horribly wrong.”
Well when you look at it from that point of view, the music video of a bunch of differently dressed people seeming to have the time of their lives while the world around them distorts to an unrecognizable image totally makes sense.
I love the music video. The distortions and the actors give the perfect sense of confusion but not minding where it goes, not wanting to abandon ship and clinging for a reason to stay. And the old time effects and way that Gerard presents himself (heavily reminiscent of artists like David Bowie) are just the cherry on top, and make him seem enough out of place to make you believe that he’s from another world.
But that’s just my point of view. This video might be a bit much for the average listener, but I promise that there’s a million reasons to watch it.
(see what I did there?)
